Job Description

Job Summary:

A Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) provides essential support to nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals in delivering high-quality care to patients. This role involves assisting with personal care, monitoring patient conditions, and ensuring a safe and comfortable environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care & Support:

Assist patients with personal care (e.g., washing, dressing, toileting, feeding).

Support patient mobility and transfers, using appropriate equipment when necessary.

Provide emotional support and companionship to patients.

Assist with preparing and serving meals, ensuring dietary needs are met.

Clinical Duties (Under Supervision):

Take and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure).

Assist in wound care, dressings, and infection control measures.

Help with specimen collection (e.g., urine, stool samples) and basic tests.

Support healthcare professionals in clinical procedures.

Communication & Documentation:

Maintain accurate patient records and report any changes in condition.

Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams.

Adhere to confidentiality and data protection policies.

Health & Safety Compliance:

Follow infection control protocols and hygiene standards.

Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and staff.

Report hazards, incidents, or concerns to the appropriate personnel.

Essential Requirements:

Previous experience in healthcare or a care-related role (preferred but not always required).

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work effectively in a team and independently.

Compassionate, patient-centered approach to care.

Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care (or equivalent).

Training in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Manual Handling.

Experience in a hospital, care home, or community care setting.

Working Conditions:

Shift-based work, including days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays.

Physical role requiring lifting, moving, and supporting patients.
