Residential Care Home Manager jobs: frequently asked questions

Welcome to our registered care home manager jobs page, featuring all the latest roles throughout the UK, as well as frequently asked questions below.

What does a residential care home manager do?

Residential care home managers (who may be known as registered managers or care home managers) run residential care homes.

They’re registered to do so by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

As a residential care home manager, you’ll have to recruit and manage staff, organise the finances of the home, and ensure the quality of care meets nationally recognised standards.

The homes you manage could support adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health conditions or older people.

What are the day-to-day duties of a residential care home manager?

As a residential care home manager, what you do on a daily basis can vary depending on the type of resident you work with.

However, your duties will typically include:

• Maintaining high quality, personalised care according to industry standards

• Hiring, managing and training staff

• Overseeing the budgets and finances of the home within required targets

• Observing health and safety standards

• Liaising with other local community organisations

• Overseeing medication and treatment plans and checking vital signs

• Planning and running group activities

• Working closely and communicating with residents’ families

Care management is very much a 24/7 responsibility.

You’ll likely work in a shift pattern, which may include unsociable hours and weekend work.

What qualifications do you need to become a residential care home manager?

To become a residential care home manager, you’ll need to become registered with the CQC.

This will require a blend of skills, qualifications and experience.

The most obvious route is gaining a level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care.

This qualification was created especially for aspiring care home managers.

However, there are some other ways of working yourself into a suitable position.

If you’re an NMC registered nurse with some leadership experience or qualifications, some care homes might consider you.

Also, with a Level 4 NVQ in Health and Social Care, as well as proof of being an experienced leader in other capacities, you may also be able to apply.

Equally, an undergraduate or master’s degree in social care would definitely make you a relevant candidate for registration.

Your skills will be carefully assessed too – not just your qualifications.

You’ll need to be caring, compassionate, patient and resilient above all else – but you’ll need to be a natural leader and communicator too.

After all, you’ll manage staff as well as the needs of residents.

How much do residential care home managers get paid?

Residential care home managers primarily work in the private sector, as the vast majority of residential care homes are privately operated.

So inevitably, unlike within the public sector, finding an average is tricky.

Industry statistics suggest that the average salary is somewhere between £30,000 and £35,000.

However, it’s not uncommon for residential care home managers to earn far more with plenty of experience – perhaps well in excess of £50,000 a year.

In the coming years there is a decent chance that the salaries on offer for care home managers will significantly increase as the country continues to try to fill the high vacancy rates in the sector.

When this will happen is hard to pinpoint, but a huge, government-led recruitment campaign is already underway, so things may change in the very near future.
